Moderator: Kristina Fagher, a CSPT Physiotherapist, has worked for Parasport Sweden since 2013. She worked as a Physiotherapist in the medical polyclinic at the 2016 Paralympic Games, and her PhD topic is titled “Sports-related injuries and illnesses in Paralympic Sport”. Abstract: Participation in sport is of great importance, especially so for individuals with disability who often have lower physical activity levels compared to their unimpaired peers. ‘The Paralympic Movement’ offers sporting opportunities in 22 summer sports and 6 winter sports for athletes with physical, visual or intellectual impairments. These opportunities range from recreational level to elite international level, with the Paralympic Games which is the pinnacle of disability sport. In recent years there has been a large evolution in sports performance capabilities and the technology associated with Paralympic sport, and many Paralympians have reached performance levels similar to those of able-bodied athletes. The Physiotherapist holds a pivotal role in this development of Paralympic sport, due to the inherent physical, rehabilitation, and behavioural sciences that underpin the profession. The number of athletes with a disability is rising, with Paralympic athletes being present all across Sweden. This generates implications for Physiotherapists working in primary care settings, hospitals, and rehabilitation clinics who may have contact with these athletes that often have complex pre-existing medical conditions and in addition sports injuries. The aim of this symposium is to give the audience an insight into the holistic role of the Physiotherapist’s work within Paralympic sport based upon both evidence-based research and clinical experiences.
