In collaboration with the Disability Research Division,
Linnaeus Centre HEAD invites you to an open seminar with
Kristina
Fagher
Department of
Health Sciences, Lund University and Parasport Sweden
“Sport-related injuries
and illnesses in Paralympic Sport”
Participation in sport is of great importance,
especially so for individuals with disability who often have lower physical
activity levels compared to their unimpaired peers. ‘The Paralympic Movement’ offers sporting
opportunities in 22 summer sports and 6 winter sports for athletes with
physical, visual or intellectual impairments. These opportunities range from
the grassroots/recreational level to the elite international level, with the
Paralympic Games which is the pinnacle of disability sporting events. In
recent years there has been a large evolution in the number of athletes, the
sports performance capabilities, and the technology associated with Paralympic
sport, and many Paralympians have reached performance levels similar to those
of elite able-bodied athletes. The audience will first be given a short
introduction about Paralympic sports to provide an insight.
During previous Paralympic Games there has been a
relatively high incidence of sports-related injuries, demonstrating that
Paralympic athletes have higher injury incidence rates compared to Olympic
athletes. Moreover,
Paralympic athletes may already have complex pre-existing medical conditions
including: neurodegenerative disorders, spinal cord injury, amputations, visual
loss and intellectual impairments. As such any sports-related injury may
further impact upon them both in their sports performance, as well as in their
daily life. In this talk the audience will be updated on the most
common injuries in Paralympic sport and Paralympic athletes´ own perceptions of
experiences from sports-related injuries.
Kristina
will also present an ongoing research project between Lund University and
Linköping University, where researchers have developed an eHealth system for
self-reporting of sports-related injuries and illnesses specifically designed
for Paralympic sport. The importance and challenges of athlete monitoring in
Paralympic sport will be discussed, along with proactive measures to facilitate
safe sporting participation in Paralympic sport underpinned by evidence-based
research.
Nicolina Pernheim
Department of
Physiotherapy, Gothenburg University and Parasport Sweden
“A Paralmypians´s
thoughts about sport and university studies”
Nicolina Pernheim is a three-time
Paralympian who participates in judo. She was born with a visual
impairment and has grown up without any sight. Nicolina will tell the audience about her sports career from
being a small child trying different sports until reaching elite level as a
blind judoka. She will talk about the importance of sports for persons with a
disability and how it has helped her to be independent, social and more
included in social- and work related activities. She will also talk about the
problem that many children with a disability today are excluded from physical activity in
Sweden because of their disability.
Nicolina
will also outline her perspective of being a Physiotherapy student and also
having a disability. The number of persons with a disability studying at the
universities is rising across Sweden. Challenges from an educational
perspective (due to her elite athlete status and her disability) will be
highlighted, as well as the coping strategies she uses to manage her studies.
Nicolina will share her experiences with the university and clinical
placements, and outline her main areas where she seeks assistance for, and what
she is capable of managing independently. She will conclude by outlining both
her strengths and weaknesses arising from her visual impairment alongside her.
The seminar will take place on January 17th
(Wednesday) at 13:15.
Venue: Room I206, I-Building, Campus Valla, Linköping
